Crisis & Traumatic Loss Counseling

Crisis Counseling
At some points in our children's lives there might be a necessity for additional emotional support. As a New Jersey licensed counselor, I work with a variety of therapists to provide that extra support for you and children. Typically, diagnoses of anxiety, depression, personality disorders, school phobias, bi-polar and ADD/ADHD, to name a few, need the intervention of helping professionals. Although I cannot provide the ongoing counseling necessary for these conditions, I can use my expertise to work with the student's outside counselor to provide support during their school day.

The Clinician Mental Health List can assist you and/or your child should you find the need for a counselor. If you already have a counselor that you feel would be beneficial to others, please do not hesitate to contact me so I can add them to our list:

Traumatic Loss
Loss is an unfortunate part of life. Sparta High School is affiliated with an organziation called Traumatic Loss Coalition. The Traumatic Loss Coalition has a parent organization and each county has its own crisis response team. They have very helpful information on a variety of types of loss, including suicide and suicidal ideation.

Should you or your child be involved in this type of situation, please contact me at your earliest opportunity. I will assist you in getting the help you need both from the school and from outside agencies.

Suicidal Ideation
This affliction can be an unfortunate thought process for adolescents. It is difficult for them to navigate the waters of change that this stage of life throws them into. At times, they may start to feel that this very final idea is a solution. Our supportive teaching and guidance staff can identify students to me that they feel may be at risk. This might occur as a result of their writing, journaling or conversations with other students. Other students can also come to me should they have these feelings or think that their friends are at risk. After a conversation with your child, I may feel it necessary to send them out for an assessment. These assessments are done at Newton Medical Center. There is a mental health facility that is accessed through the Emergency Room. Parents will be contacted to pick up their child and take them for the assessment immediately. We understand that this can be a lengthy process, however, this is not a situation which with we can take risks. The mental health and well-being of your child is of paramount importance. After the assessment is complete, you will be given recommenations by the clinicians. Should your child be able to return to school, a re-entry meeting with me is necessary prior to their return to the classroom. The recommendations by the clinicians must be followed in order for us to proved the safest and most supportive environment possible.

For identifying information about this possible problem with your child, please access the link above for the Traumatic Loss Coalition for signs and symptoms.
