The Yearbook (Olympian), is published each year by our students under the direction of its advisor. Students involved in yearbook are involved in all aspects of publishing which include, but are not limited to: design layout, writing, photography, proofreading, editing, advertising, marketing, publicity, and sales. In addition, they are learning cooperation, dedication, time management, and responsibility which are invaluable life lessons.
The four major functions of yearbook are as follows:
- to summarize the year's events through pictures and a theme
- to feature a variety of student activities with added emphasis on seniors
- to give worthwhile educational training to student staff members
- to build good will, giving a true, comprehensive picture of what the school is accomplishing in a given year.
Yearbook Sales Team members will be responsible for the sale of advertisements and patron messages to local businesses and the Sparta community. They will learn to see a sale through from start to finish. Responsibilities will include: creating marketing strategies, compiling a list of prospective advertisers and patrons, contacting and visiting them (in pairs), handling all business transactions (i.e. solicitation, invoicing, bill payments), preparing thank you letters, and delivering patron posters to those who have bought an ad.
Members of the sales team that have their own cars will be given a territory to cover in Sparta and neighboring towns. Those that do not have cars can sell ads/messages to SHS students, staff, and parents. If permitted by their parent/guardian, they will be paired with a member who has a car. Permission from the parents of the member who has a car is required, as well.
FYI-Being on the yearbook staff is one of the best resume builders that post-secondary schools and employers look for!
